North Berwick – the First Scottish Winner of Best Places to Live

This year’s Sunday Times “Best Places to Live 2024” sees North Berwick top the annual list of 72 locations throughout the UK. The judges' view was: “Great shops, a great school, the great outdoors – and the chance to have lobster for lunch on the beach – are among the many reasons that North Berwick has been named as the best place to live in the UK”

First Scottish Winner in the history of the awards

The Sunday Times has been running this guide for the last 12 years and North Berwick is the first Scottish winner. In addition to the great shops, great schools and the great outdoors, the judges cited a combination of community spirit and connections to Edinburgh as some of the reasons for the award. Edinburgh is only 30 minutes away by train.

Independent shops on the busy high street and two beaches also scored high with the judges.

To reach their decision, the judges not only visit the locations but also speak to residents. The aim is to find out what it is really like to live in a location and what makes it special.

There is always a balance to be reached when selecting a place to live. It might be convenience of the commute to a nearby city, community activities, the diverse variety of shops and the wide range of recreational activities. North Berwick has it all and that’s why the judges decided it is the best place to live in 2024.
